Further your professional development througH industry mentoring

One of the most effective ways to enhance your professional development is through industry mentoring.

HOST International, in partnership with Regional Opportunities Australia, offers an industry mentoring program that connects professionals with a migrant or refugee background to experienced individuals working in their local field.

Moreen, a qualified civil engineer with experience in construction and consultancy, registered her interest in being a mentor through the program.

Having personally experienced the advantages of mentoring, she fully appreciates its potential to provide valuable guidance and support.

"As someone who has personally experienced the advantages of mentoring, I fully appreciate its potential to provide valuable guidance and support," explains Moreen.

Through the program, Moreen was connected with a civil engineer who had over 20 years of overseas experience but was struggling to find a role in the local sector.

Despite professionals from all over Australia participating in the program, Moreen was fortunate enough to be located close to her mentee, allowing them to meet in person.

"He had the technical ability for the roles, but being new to the country, a big part of our time was spent discussing who the local stakeholders are, how contracts work, project structure and delivery methods specific to Australia, given that they vary across different countries," Moreen explains.

Within just a month of their mentorship, Moreen's mentee secured his first part-time position in the field.

And within two months, to their mutual delight, he successfully applied for a full-time civil engineering role.

"I'd encourage others to become involved. It's been a great learning and development experience both on a professional and personal level," says Moreen.
